Deaf sector campaigns receive recognition in a House of Lords debate

Signature and our deaf sector colleagues have received praise for our campaign work in a recent debate in the House of Lords.

The debate organised by Lord Hunt on access to public services for deaf people featured a number of mentions of Signature’s joint campaigns and project work. We met with Lord Hunt prior to the debate to brief him on the barriers deaf people experience to accessing public services.

During the debate Signature and NDCS’s I-Sign project, which aims to improve access to sign language support for deaf children and their families, was mentioned by Baroness Brinton.

Signature’s campaign work was also praised by Baroness Jolly who said “I pay tribute to the work of the voluntary sector. We have heard today about organisations such as Action on Hearing Loss, Signature and National Deaf Children’s Society, which campaign tirelessly to ensure that the needs of deaf people are not forgotten”.

It is encouraging that our work has been recognised in this way and we hope it will spur the government on to improve access to public services for deaf people.
