Deaf Sports Personality of the Year 2022 Shortlist Announced

Deaf Sports Personality of the Year just announced the shortlisted nominees for their awards this year! We’ve listed all of the shortlists below, with each category’s title linking to DSPY’s official announcement videos. These contain more information about each candidate and why they were nominated.

As well as these individual videos of nominations for each category, you can also watch the highlights of the entire shortlisted nominees livestream which was broadcast on Sunday 11th December. It is presented in BSL, and has both captions and voice over.

Now that the shortlisters have been announced, voting is open until 31st December 2022 at 23.59pm! You can cast your vote online via www.dspy.co.uk or Deaf Sports Personality of the Year’s other social media platforms.

Your votes for the shortlisted nominees will be worth 40% of the overall mark and the rest of 60% will be decided by the national judges. The final results will be announced at the awards night in Spring 2023 and DSPY will announce the date and venue after the New Year.


Deaf Sports Personality of the Year Shortlist:


Charlotte Payne – Athletics (Hammer)

Her 2022 achievements:

  • Broke the World Deaf Record 2022 with 70.59m, beating the previous distance by almost 5 metres, at the Senior British Athletics Championships (Mainstream) in Manchester.
  • Became the youngest and 3rd best British Female Thrower ever to throw over 70m at the Senior British Athletics Championships (Mainstream) in Manchester.
  • Represented Great Britain at the Senior European Championships 2022 (Mainstream) in Leira, Portugal, and missed out on the gold medal by less than half a metre!
  • Selected as Team GB Captain for the European U20 Athletics Championships 2021 (Mainstream) with 80 hearing athletes in Tallinn, Estonia.

George Greenway – Cricket

His 2022 achievements:

  • Captain of England’s Deaf Cricket Team since 2019 who won the first Deaf Ashes in 2022
  • Hit 52 not out to win the first ODI against Australia in Brisbane
  • Achieved what is believed to be the all-time club record for individual runs score and wickets taken in a single match batting at number five for Exmouth CC
  • Reported by Cricketer Magazine as No. 1 draft pick selected for Black Cats

Josh Price – Cricket

His 2022 achievements:

  • One of the world’s leading players in the disability category, winning player of the match 3 times as well as Player of the Series during the Deaf Ashes, in which he featured in all 8 matches, ended with an average of 32 with the bat which also included a match winning knock of 83 in an opening ODI victory in Brisbane.
  • He also took 11 wickets in the series.
  • Named Lord’s Taverners Disability Cricketer of the Year for 2022.

Matthew Bradshaw – Golf

His 2022 achievements:

  • Won the England Deaf Golf Spring Event 2021 attaining “scratch” status (handicap of zero).
  • Took third place for the England Deaf Golf Spring Event 2022 and also finished second place in England Deaf Golf Open Event 2022 and won the England Deaf Golf Autumn Event 2022.
  • Won top points for England Deaf Golf Order Of Merit during the year 2022.
  • Participated in England Deaf Golf team at the World Deaf Golf Championships 2022 in Hawaii finishing in 12th place out of the 41 for the Men’s Individual category.

Thomas Paull – MMA

His 2022 achievements are:

  • Became Champion at the Retribution Fighting Championships 2021 by knockout.
  • Became the first double Light Welterweight Champion (74kg & 70kg) at the Golden Ticket Fighting Promotion events in 2021 and 2022.
  • Fought for Dana White’s Contender Series at UFC Apex in Las Vegas, USA, narrowly missing out on the opportunity to sign a professional contract for the UFC.
  • Ranked 7th of 208. UK fighters in Lightweights and 9th for Welterweight.

Zara Musker – Futsal

Her 2022 achievements are:

  • Played with the Bolton team for the National Futsal Super Series Final 2021 who achieved second place.
  • Selected for England Deaf Women Futsal squad at the European Deaf Futsal Championships 2022 in Italy where her team became European Champions for the first time ever after beating Spain in the final.
  • Became women’s top goal scorer of the tournament with 10 goals and was named int he Women’s All Star team.
  • Currently training with Salford Lionesses Women football team and plays for Bolton Futsal Club.
