Signature the UK’s leading awarding organisation in British Sign Language (BSL) are excited to share our new online course – BSL for beginners.
The course, an introduction to BSL and deaf awareness provides an immersive learning experience, with informal clips, receptive practice, short multiple-choice quizzes, vocabulary and more.
Over the last 6 – 12 months we have seen an increase in online ‘introductory’ courses popping up, concerns have been raised with us about the quality of some of these courses, that’s why we have done something about it.
Our aim was to create an affordable online course, that had been created by experts, a course that would give people some basic deaf awareness and BSL that they could use in everyday life.
Within the 2-hour course, we cover:

- Basic Deaf Awareness
- Tips for communicating with a deaf or hard of hearing person
- Fingerspelling
- Basic BSL phrases and vocabulary
- Career paths
The course will be hosted on the Signature Learning Hub, our dedicated platform for training and CPD and will cost £9.99.
On completion of the course, you will be emailed a certificate of course completion for your records.

Over the last couple of months, we have spoken to our staff internally, external experts and some of our teachers to make sure that what we are including in BSL for beginners provides the right balance and delivers a course that provides useful skills to learners.
Our course will be delivered by Deaf teachers, with many years of experience teaching BSL and is a great platform for students to go on and take a qualification.
We want to encourage more people to continue their BSL journey, we want more people to gain a qualification and more people to be confident signers”.
