Private Members Bill highlights the need for greater communication support for deaf people

The Private Members Bill (PMB) on Deaf Communication is being put before parliament by Sir Malcolm Bruce MP, one of the deaf community’s foremost advocates. The bill provides an opportunity to raise the profile of deaf people’s communication needs.

On 3 September, Signature is attending a meeting with Sir Malcolm, and a host of leading figures from the deaf sector, to discuss the Private Members Bill. The meeting is taking place in Portcullis House just a stones throw away from the House of Commons

The bill’s main aim is to establish a body called the Council for Communication Support on Deafness. The proposed council will have wide ranging remit relating to communication support for deaf people.  Its core responsibilities will include: conducting research into the level of deaf communication support, promotion of British Sign Language teaching and support for deaf and hard of hearing children in schools.

We support Sir Malcolm’s bill, it provides a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of the everyday communication needs of deaf people.
